        Reluctant Heroes is looking for...

        Illustrators

We’re looking for an understanding of anatomy and design principles. Things like composition, color, perspective, hierarchy, and rhythm. The application itself will ask for a medium-sized portfolio of 7-15 pieces. This can be a google drive folder, a personal website, or something similar. (We do ask you not to link us to a cluttered social media page.) Since this zine deals heavily with settings and characters, we want to see how you draw them. Illustrative backgrounds are required for this zine. Abstract backgrounds, such as a gradient, simple pattern, or no background at all, will lower your chances of getting into the zine.

        Writers

We will be looking at characterization first and foremost. This means that we want to see if the way you depict your characters and their interactions with others ring true to canon. For AU samples, we won’t expect characters to be 100% true to their canon forms. Instead, we’ll focus on if any differences in character are believable given the different circumstances. Beyond characterization, we will also look at spelling and grammar, story structure, mood, and if your overall style is a good fit for the zine. We will request three writing samples that are 1-3k in length and an optional portfolio that can contain as much or as little as you desire. A google folder or a link to your Ao3 account are both acceptable portfolios.

        Merch

We’re looking for similar criteria to the illustrators, but with merch designs in mind. If you want to make charms, show us what you can do for a charm. If you want to make buttons, show us your button designs. We will be judging your design, not production. A Portfolio of 8-20~ designs is ideal, but submit whatever amount will show your best quality.
